As the disease spreads slowly through your body, pumped by your heart to the tips of your arms and your legs, your greatest fear was that your mind wouldn’t last, your coherency and alertness would be the first things to fade, as your hair thinned, as the weight fell off, as your teeth blackened, as the lesions spotted your skin, as you fell to your knees in the center of the stage, as you offered witness to mortality in exchange for the ticket price, as the lights blended into the continuing noise, as all hope was finally lost.
- Adrenaline carried one last thought to fruition:
Let this be the end.
Let this be the last song.
Let this be the end.
Let all be forgiven.

This song always gave me chills. even more so now that we know. I love you Laura.

Embers in the Sea:

I had a strange experience sitting alone on the rocks near La Jolla Shores one evening. Just off shore there is a vast kelp forest and this forest, like all forests, is filled with hidden life. One of the creatures which makes the forest its home is a peculiar little fish with an even more peculiar manner of reproducing. The females lay eggs on the stalks of the kelp and then on a particular moonlight night the males, all at once, release their sperm into the water where it is carried to the eggs by the currents and the tide. The water foams white and the air is filled with the scent of sex.

I sat, enraptured by the experience, watching the moonlight trip along the ripples on the water when suddenly I was presented with a grand spectacle. Lights, thousands maybe even millions of darting. skipping lights. It was as if each of the tiny lives in the water were suddenly luminescent, white, orange, yellow and blue they moved like embers from a bonfire. Suddenly I was transfixed. I was overwhelmed by the sensation of life. I realized that these little lives dancing and darting about were a single life and only appeared to be separate. Then the realization came to me like lightening from a clear sky. All life is part of this larger being. All life is one. Not in some mystical metaphorical sense but in a very real and concrete sense. Suddenly, I was no longer alone and I never have been since.

As ridiculous as it may seem, yawn ten times – right now – even if you don’t feel like it. You can begin by doing a fake yawn, which is just breathing in deeply and exhale with a sigh. Just try it. And, to make it more effective, start stretching and twisting and turning the whole body as you yawn. By the third or fourth time, if your eyes are closed, you may notice sparkles appear, you may feel different types of tingles. Continue yawning as the process cools down an overly active frontal lobe, which is where all of our busy thoughts and worries take place. Yawning is as effective as doing ten to fifteen minutes of relaxation or meditation exercises. Now, take a moment and notice which differences, no matter how small, you are feeling at this very moment. You now have more bloodflow in key parts of your brain that are directly associated with consciousness. And not just every day consciousness, but a higher state of consciousness. So it doesn’t matter which spiritual practice you use. But stepping back and noticing a fundamental change in your sensations or shifts in your feeling and thinking is called mindfulness.
